Label & Package Recycling

Label waste is complex blend of paper, plastics, and adhesives which presents a significant challenge for waste management in the UK. The fibre is water resistant, so struggles to be broken down in standard UK paper recycling facilities, while the plastics and adhesives are difficult to separate. Consequently, much of this waste ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental harm, or is processed into lower-quality fuels like Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). With increasing regulatory pressures in the UK to reduce landfill use and carbon emissions, finding sustainable solutions for managing label waste is crucial.

At Mid UK, we have a solution that increases both environmental and economic benefits by converting this waste into specialised Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) as a more sustainable alternative to landfill and RDF. We can collect your label waste, or you can deliver it to one of our facilities around the UK. It is then moved to our specialist site in Barkston, near Grantham.

We have the equipment and the other material types needed to produce the right fuel blend; the process includes cutting dense reels of material and multiple shreds to reduce particle size and remove contamination. This is followed by blending it with other material types to make the perfect SRF for our UK-based offtakes.

SRF is a more refined version of RDF, offering a higher calorific value and lower waste outputs such as ash. This results in more efficient combustion, requiring less fuel to generate the same energy. This is especially true for energy-intensive heavy industries such as Energy from Waste facilities and cement kilns. As such, it is more suited to displace high-carbon fossil fuels such as coal.
